뉴욕 맨해튼서 트럭, 자전거도로 돌진, 8명 사망
Turning now to the horrific events in the United States…
Eight people have been killed and about a dozen others injured in New York City after a truck smashed into people on a cycle path in Lower Manhattan.
The authorities have confirmed it was a terror attack carried out by an immigrant from Uzbekistan.
Responding to the attack,… President Trump has ordered Homeland Security to step up his administration’s extreme vetting program on people entering the United States.
Ro Aram has the details.
Local media, citing law enforcement sources, are reporting that the suspect is a 29-year-old man by the name of Sayfullo Saipov.
He is reported to be an Uzbek national who came to the United States in 2010 and had apparently settled in Florida.
The suspect is in police custody and being treated in hospital.
He was shot in the abdomen by police after exiting the Home Depot rental truck and displaying imitation firearms, which were found to be a paintball gun and a pellet gun.
Authorities also reportedly found a note written in Arabic inside the truck, in which the suspect appears to pledge his allegiance to ISIS.
The suspect drove south down the bike path alongside the West Side Highway at full speed and struck several people before crashing into a school bus a number of blocks away.
He is said to have shouted “God is great” in Arabic as he fled the vehicle. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating Tuesday’s incident.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called it a “cowardly act of terror.”
Officials say that as of yet there are no signs the suspect was part of a wider network and he is believed to have acted as a lone wolf.
Six of the eight people killed died at the scene and two more were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
11 people are said to be seriously hurt, although their injuries are not life-threatening.
In a tweet, President Trump called the suspect a “very sick and deranged person” …. and expressed his condolences to the victims in a later tweet.
