Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse “Gallopin’ Gertie”

Watch the amazing “Gallopin’ Gertie” November 7, 1940 film clip.
1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge
Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span’s short life ended in disaster. “Galloping Gertie,” collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940.

The bridge became famous as “the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history.” Now, it’s also “one of the world’s largest man-made reefs.” The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers.

A dramatic tale of failure and success
The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie’s failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today.

We've come a long way? The original design of the bridge was done by a local engineer and was essentially a smaller version of the SF Golden Gate bridge. It is believed this design would have worked fine.
However, the local engineers bosses decided that they should get his design checked by consultants. The consultants have to justify their fees, so they pointed out (correctly) that the Golden Gate bridge type design was not efficient as a lot of strength is used in maintaining it's own weight; more modern design would aim for a lighter structure they argued.

This was very true, but lighter designs were also less proven (the resonance seen is this structure was known, but not fully understood.

But the powers that be were impressed; they reasoned that they had been stupid to entrust the design to such a humble engineer, and they should pay for more expensive consultants to get an even better design.

And so the process continued through a series of ever higher experts who all had to justify their existence by ever more radical 'improvements'; resulting in a completely unproven type of structure which revealed unknown problems.

Moral: Don't bother with consultants; Rely on tried and trusted techniques; Extrapolate existing technology in limited steps.

Unfortunately such rationale is increasingly ignored as consultants are increasingly used to obtain short term gains that are resulting in structures that don't stand the test of time. The only reason we have less collapses is we have models and instruments that predict disasters better. But they don't avoid the stupidity and waste.
